PRYMCA offering winter survival course

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Chris Wesley, program director at the Piscataquis Regional YMCA, announced that the PRYMCA will be offering a snowshoeing and winter survival course beginning on Jan. 21 and running for six weeks. Wesley said, “Now that winter is finally here, it is important for people to not only have fun outside, but to know how to stay safe and comfortable as well.”

The course will be taught by registered Maine Guide Ed Mathieu and will take place at the PRYMCA at 48 Park Street on Monday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30. The class will include indoor and outdoor work as well as a trip to wilderness land to practice the skills learned in class and to learn practical lessons about animal tracking.

Other topics covered in the class will include: the history of snowshoeing, parts of a snowshoe, how to pick the right snowshoes for you, snowshoeing techniques, proper clothing, the right foods to bring, first aid, how to avoid and treat hypothermia and frostbite and more.

Those interested in participating should call the PRYMCA at 564-7111 or stop by at 48 Park Street to register. Advanced registration is suggested as the class size is limited to just seven people. If you have your own snowshoes you are encouraged to bring them, but snowshoes will be available for those who need them.

The Piscataquis Regional YMCA is a cause-driven organization that is committed to the community and dedicated to promoting healthy spirit, mind, and body for all, through programs and services grounded in Christian heritage and the core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
