September events at Thompson Free Library

By Kim Brawn

DOVER-FOXCROFT — As you shift gears into fall, remember to take advantage of the resources and programs offered at the Thompson Free Library in Dover-Foxcroft. Our September lineup highlights new programs along with ongoing favorites.

Keep in mind that one of those favorites, storytime, now begins at 11 a.m. (instead of 10:30) each Thursday. This weekly program last about an hour, is geared toward children ages 2-6 and combines reading two or three books with making a craft, usually tied together by a theme (like seasons, school, etc.).

“The focus is to promote literacy,” said Librarian Michelle Fagan, storytime coordinator and host. “Everyone is welcome, you don’t have to be a library patron.” It’s the perfect complement to pre-K and other educational activities.

Pine Tree Hospice’s Executive Director Jane Stitham and Coordinator of Client and Volunteer Services Lisa White will explain what a volunteer hospice is, the services they offer and how to become a volunteer at our Brown Bag Lunch Series on Thursday, Sept. 8 from 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Two programs, presented by The World in Your Library, will focus on very timely and important issues. On Thursday, Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. there will be a talk on China, followed on Tuesday, Sept. 27 by a talk about the European Union (EU). If you want to learn more about China’s powerful role on the global stage and better understand what the EU is and why it matters (Brexit, etc.) these presentations are sure to be illuminating.

Finally, a Star Party is in the works for Friday, Sept. 30. Details to come — but it will involve using the library’s telescope to do some amateur astronomy stargazing during the new moon.

To find out more about the Star Party (and other programs) please call or email the Thompson Free Library (186 East Main Street) at 564-3350 or df@thompson.lib.me.us. You can also follow us on Facebook.
