DOVER-FOXCROFT — August means back to school is just around the corner so make sure to take advantage of the special programs at the Thompson Free Library before schedules get too hectic.

Our summer kids’ programs end on a whimsical note with “Fairy Gardens” on Wednesday, Aug. 3 at 10:30 a.m. After the program (from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) anyone under 18 can get a free bag lunch and those over 18 can buy one. The final Summer Lunch Program takes place Thursday, Aug. 4 from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

On Thursday, Aug. 11 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. the Brown Bag Lunch Series continues with local herbalist Linda Tisdale. She will talk about “Using Plant Medicines” for first aid, common ailments and more serious health challenges. Feel free to bring a lunch or snack and your questions.

Get ready for some friendly competition as Family Lawn Game Night returns Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. Play croquet, badminton, bocce ball and other perennial favorites and make delicious s’mores by the fire.

If you’re a caregiver, you can find out more about the Piscataquis Thriving in Place Collaborative (facilitated by the Charlotte White Center, working with many other social service agencies) on Thursday, Aug. 18 at 1 p.m. Their mission is to improve regional services and supports that help adults with chronic health conditions stay safe and well at home.

On the third Thursday of each month community volunteer Joan Shapleigh will be at the library to answer questions and “point people in the right direction” if she doesn’t have the answers. “We want to help caregivers feel more comfortable and get the support they need,” Shapleigh explained. Various information resources will also be available.

On Thursday, Aug. 25 at 6 p.m. Maine author Matthew Cost will speak about one of Brunswick and Brewer’s greatest heroes Joshua Chamberlain, a college professor and Union Army volunteer who helped turn the tide of the Civil War at Gettysburg. Cost wrote a historical novel based on the real life exploits of Chamberlain, “Joshua Chamberlain and the Civil War: At Every Hazard”.

The Charlotte White Center will display artwork at the library for the month of August. Be sure to come by and check out their wonderful creativity.
