Hydrangea tree dedication marks GFWC anniversary

DOVER-FOXCROFT — GFWC/Miosac Club members gathered at the Marion Doore Park May 18 for a double tree dedication. General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) celebrated 125 years of service in 2015.

COMMUNITY IMPROVEMENT COMMITTEE The GFWC/Miosac Club’s community improvement committee worked to get a hydrangea tree planted at the Marion Doore Park in Dover-Foxcroft, which was dedicated during a May 18 ceremony. Members voted last year to plant a tree in observance of the important milestone. Community Improvement Chairman Pat Jones did some research to find a tree the would do well in this area. She selected a hydrangea tree and a stone matching the one placed at the park in 2011 in honor of Doore — who was a member of the Miosac Club. George and Brenda Merrill did the groundwork and planted the tree. Committee members were Jones, Rheba Michaud, Suzanne Raymond and Anne Cress.

At the same time another tree purchased by the town in observance of Arbor Week was dedicated in the park. Town manager Jack Clukey, Selectmen Steve Grammont and Gail D’Agostino and Deputy Tax Collector Cindy Woodworth attended the ceremony.

Doore was a longtime teacher in the area. The Mocutoc Club made a playground and called it the Marion Doore’s Little People Park. The equipment became dilapidated and was too expensive to replace so it was not kept up. The Mocotuc Club disbanded and the GFWC/Miosac Club took it over. The green space has several trees and a bench for people to sit and enjoy the day. Flowers are added every year. Members and Foxcroft Academy Key Club students keep the park in good shape and the town crews take away the leaves in the fall.

The GFWC/Miosac Club thanks all who support the project and for the services provided to this year’s ceremony.
