GFWC/Miosac Club news

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The GFWC/Miosac Club met at Thayer Parkway March 1. Elaine Larson introduced Trish Smith from the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Service. Smith is a master gardener and works at the Cooperative Extension Office.

GETTING READY TO GARDEN Trisha Smith, left and a master gardener who works for University of Maine Cooperative Extension, spoke to the GFWC/Miosac Club on March 1. Smith was introduced by Elaine Larson, right.

 

She explained how she became interested in gardening. As a child, her parents planted and harvested and the children were expected to help out. Smith worked at a flower shop until it closed and then she was hired at Cooperative Extension. She explained the many services Cooperative Extensions offers, as well as planting and when to start seedlings.

President Vicki Moschella called the meeting to order, welcoming members and thanking hostesses Diane Leighton and RoxyMcGlauflin. Anne Cress led the Club Collect, American’s Creed and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Minnie McCormick took roll call with 12 members present and read the minutes of the last meeting. Roxy McGlauflin read a thank you note from Dot Finnemore.

Elaine Larson announced the local art show to be April 3 at the Congregational Church from 1:30-3:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend, refreshments will be served. Schools from Greenville, Guilford, Milo and Dover-Foxcroft will be displaying their artworks. Suzette East will again be the judge. Local Kiwanis clubs provide money for prizes. The District 3 Art Show will be held at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer on April 9.

Cress, who is chairman of the ice out committee, accepted money and tickets from those who had sold theirs. Ticket s will be sold until March 31, and the person who guesses the correct time and date will win $100. The contest is a big fundraiser for the club to carry on its many activities.

Moschella announced Maud McKenzie Scholarship and interest free loan forms are available and students are encouraged to speak with their guidance counselors.

Toys for Mayo Regional Hospital were on display. Members sewed some at home and will continue to do so.

The meeting was adjourned and delicious refreshments were served by Leighton and McGlauflin on a seacoast decorated table.

Moschella reminded members of the GFWC state photography contest and encouraged members to participate.
