DOVER-FOXCROFT — SeDoMoCha Middle School students recently had the opportunity to put their artistic talents to the test in a poster contest promoting the school’s breakfast program. The winners were announced on the afternoon of March 3, shortly before National School Breakfast Week March 7-11 which is part of National Nutrition Month. This year’s theme is “Savor the Flavor of Eating Right.”

RSU 68 Food Service Director Kandi Hartford said 21 entrants took part in the breakfast poster contest, either individually or in pairs, with all participants receiving a small prize. She said the students had about two and half weeks to create their posters showing “Why I like school breakfast” or “How I feel when I have had a really good breakfast.”

Posters were judged by school staff as well as members of the Wellness Team, and “I am going to hang them in the cafeteria,” Hartford said about the various poster submissions.

Fifth-grader Annie Raynes earned grand prize honors in the breakfast poster contest with her work of art titled, “Don’t Run on Empty, Fill Up on School Breakfast.” Raynes’ color poster featured a school bus along with breakfast items such as a piece of toast and a muffin with facial features and arms and legs as well as an apple clinging to the back of the bus.

Raynes won the top prize, a competitor speed stackers cup stacking set which along with the other bestowed items were sponsored by the Wellness Team.

The next level prize was a $25 gift card to Subway, and this honor went to fifth-grader Ella Molaghan. Grade 5 students Taebria Currie and Cassandra Smith tied for the next prize, $15 Subway gift cards. Sixth-grader Aidan Currie rounded out the poster honorees, and he earned a $10 Subway gift card for his artwork.

All students at the SeDoMoCha complex have the opportunity to start their day off right with a a universal free breakfast, with the meal served regardless of the K-8 pupils’ free or reduced meal status. Hartford said a second chance breakfast recently started during the middle school mid-morning snack time so students do not have to go without a healthy item, and about a dozen pupils took advantage the second chance breakfast during a recent morning.
