MILO — All four teams taking to the field earned some Heal Points as Penquis Valley High School and Greenville High School tied in both girls and boys soccer during back-to-back interclass games held during the Patriots’ Homecoming on Oct. 10. The girls finished at two goals apiece and the boys followed with a final score of 1-1.

The visiting Laker girls jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening contest. Nearly 10 minutes in senior Shelby Ward was awarded a penalty shot and she kicked the ball into the right side of the net for Greenville’s first goal.

ON EVEN FOOTING Penquis junior Clayton Preble and sophomore Nick Foley of Greenville both try to win control of the ball, with Patriot sophomore Tyler Pardue in the background, during an Oct. 10 contest in Milo. Penquis hosted Greenville in both girls and boys play during its 2015 Homecoming and the two games each ended in a tie with the girls finishing 2-1 and the boys ending at a goal apiece.

Over 10 minutes later junior Amber Benway passed the ball in to Ward on a throw-in from the left sideline. Ward dribbled a few steps and then got off a shot that found the mark for the 2-0 advantage.

Later in the opening half Penquis was awarded a penalty shot with freshman Camryn Rolfe going one-on-one with Laker sophomore keeper Charlotte Aucoin. Rolfe’s shot was aimed at the center of the goal and the ball was snuck underneath the bar to put the Patriots on the scoreboard.

The team had the equalizer in the second half. With the ball at the center of the field, sophomore Kelsey Robinson passed to freshman Cymeria Robshaw who ran in from the right for the scoring strike at the 30:09-mark.

Over the next 30 minutes neither defense let in another goal and the squads also both had scoreless efforts in a pair of five-minute overtimes.

Penquis junior Jordan Durant finished with a game-high 24 saves (Aucoin stopped 16 shots). Durant’s 24th and final save came with about 10 seconds left in overtime No. 2 as she caught the ball on a shot from the right by Greenville eighth-grader Jessica Pomerleau to preserve the tie.

Greenville’s record changed to 6-5-1 after the tie, as the Lakers are unbeaten (3-0-1) in the team’s last four games. Penquis also had its first tie of 2015 to move to 5-4-1, having gone 4-2-1 over seven games.

In boys’ play, Greenville struck very early. Sophomore Noah Pratt fired off a crossing pass to freshman Jay Owens as Owens scored from the right just over two and half minutes after the opening touch.

The Patriots’ equalizer came in the second half on a goal from junior Justin Valvo, with freshman Jeremy Martin assisting on a shot coming from the left of the Laker goal with 21:57 remaining in regulation.

The two teams limited the opposition’s scoring chances over 90 minutes of play with the two overtimes as Greenville sophomore keeper Evan Bjork made five saves and counterpart Penquis senior Josh Martin stopped three shots.

The home team’s record stood at 1-7-3 after the game and the Lakers moved to 3-5-4, having ties in three of the last four games.

The two programs will play another doubleheader, with these contests taking place in Greenville on Thursday with the girls’ scheduled at 2 p.m. and the boys’ game to follow.
