Piscataquis County Retired educators news

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The Piscataqis County Retired Educators met Aug. 25 with 14 members and two guests present. President Gil Reynolds called the meeting to order. Gloria Burns led the Collect and Pledge of Allegiance.  She then read the secretary’s report. Myrna Ricker gave the treasurer’s report.

Reynolds gave a report of the community supper the retired educators sponsored as being  a success, about 40 people attended. Members were pleased with the report.H e asked for a nomination for vice president. Rheba Michaud was nominated and voted in.

Reynolds then presented Denise Buzzelli, executive director of the Piscatauqis Chamber of Commerce.  She asked members to tell their names and where and how long they taught. She then praised teachers in general for all the good work they do.

Buzzelli came from a finance and mortgage background. She noted that PIscataquis County is not the poorest county anymore. She could see the need for change and going forward. She has started a Junior Chamber of Commerce. Youth will meet with business owners and learn about their future. Buzzelli stressed the need to make youth see there is something to look forward to and give them the tools to move forward. Students will learn how  to approach businesses, how to dress for interviews and how to put their best foot forward.

She has had good luck in Milo with some of the students. Buzzelli says they can start a business. The greatest need is to make a program that is affordable. She suggested solving one problem at a time and fixing it before going on the the next one. Buzzelli also urged the group as teachers to encourage young people and help them see how they can help themselves.

Members enjoyed the program very much and wish her much success

Reynolds spoke about the Community Day of Caring and suggested the group does the same as last year. He moved that the educators donate $5. to each elementary school to provide snacks for the students. The motion carried.

The next meeting will be Sept. 22 and Minnie McCormick will conduct a Necrology Service for recently deceased members.
