Sept. 4 meeting of the Skeleton Crew to address falls prevention

  By Beth Ranagan

DEXTER — The incidence of falls in Maine is the eighth highest in the nation. Of the adults 65 and older, 18.2 percent reported falls within the last three-month period according to a 2013 Senior Report by America’s Health Rankings. The average cost of a fall in Maine is $16,000.

Sept. 23 is Falls Prevention Awareness Day. To celebrate this day, the Skeleton Crew will welcome Marcy King, owner and instructor at Millside Fitness, to speak about the programs to build strength and improve balance at her center. She will demonstrate some of the exercises used in her senior-cise sessions. Exercise is considered a major contributor to good balance for fall prevention as well as building and maintaining bone health.

Join the Skeleton Crew at the Abbott Memorial Library at noon on Friday, Sept. 4 to hear King’s presentation. The program is open to the public. Call Liz at the library for more information (924-7929).
