Garden Club blooms in a Maine community

MILO — Recently the Milo Garden Club held its only fundraiser of the year, the annual summer fair. Pretty perennials and houseplants, floral displays and fresh vegetables were an impressive showcase welcoming visitors to the fair on Aug. 6. Every table bustled with activity and people found themselves winners whether buying plants, baked goods, nearly new items, handmade crafts, bidding at the silent auction or entering the club’s traditional raffle. A lovely luncheon was also available for the mere cost of a generous donation. At every prettily decorated table, visitors sat discussing their purchases, plans and anticipation of next year’s fair.

One need not wait a year to enjoy the opportunities offered by Milo Garden Club. Besides monthly meetings featuring guest speakers and dessert, special committees report on bird sightings, civic development, conservation, horticulture and youth activities.

Beyond these meetings, which are scheduled from September to June, the Milo Garden Club supports special projects and organizations. They are Girl Scout and Boy Scouts, Milo Ecumenical Food Cupboard, Ronald McDonald House, the activity fund at Hibbard Skilled Nursing Center, Three Rivers Kiwanis Secret Santa, Garden Club Federation of Maine, Penobscot District Campership, Evergreen Cemetery Fund, SAD 41 Outing Club and decorating the town with floral baskets and Christmas wreaths.

But, that is not all. Becoming a member means the opportunity to participate in creating parade floats and planting flowers throughout the Milo community. Gardeners will enjoy planting and caring for flowers at Camden National Bank, Milo Family Practice, Milo Heights, Milo Historical Society, Doble Park, Milo Post Office, Milo Free Public Library, Milo Town Hall and Veterans Park gazebo.

The Milo Garden Club welcomes anyone who loves birds, blooms and nature’s beauty. Please call Gini Goodhind at 943-7772 or Pauline Mullins at 343-2612 for more information.
