Club finishes working year with lunch, meeting

By Minnie McCormick

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The GFWC/Miosac Club had all 15 meetings this year as the weather cooperated for all but one which we made up the next week. We had a variety of programs, learning about elder abuse prevention, banking for seniors and helping children, Tai Chi, quilling and ribbon embroidery. We celebrated Mardi Gras, enjoyed an international dinner and a crazy hats/card game night. We enjoyed a travelog of Alaska. We held a very successful high school art contest. We learned about the mill restoration project. We all enjoyed a Christmas party and Wednesday, May 13, we will have our annual birthday dinner at the Lake Shore House Restaurant in Monson.

We donated money to the Kiwanis Community Christmas Campaign, $100 to Helping Hands with Heart and $350 to the new Dover-Foxcroft Area Food Cupboard. Money raised from the collection jar will be given to the new senior center.
Following the Brown Bag Lunch, President Vicki Moschella called the meeting to order. Roxy McGlauflin led the Club Collect, American’s Creed and Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Cathie Goodine took roll call and read the secretary’s report. Carol Kilpatrick gave the treasurer’s report. McGlauflin read a thankyou note from Jane Blay, art teacher at Foxcroft Academy, thanking us for the nooney they received at the art show.
We had a Linus Quilt wrap up with 170 quilts being made. Anne Cress gave the Ice Out report. The winner was Mrs. Salonick from Pittsfield, who guessed the exact date and time of  April 29 at 3:15 p.m.

PROJECT LINUS QUILTS — GFWC/Miosac Club members pose with quilts made by Elaine Larson and Suzanne Raymond. Members in the photo attended Project Linus Quilt Day at the Penquis Higher Education Center. One hundred and seventy quilts were finished and members had a  great day contributing – some had made quilts prior to the day. Front, from left, Cathie Goodine, Rheba Michaud, Minnie McCormick and Betsey Ryan. Back, Elaine Larson, Suzanne Raymond, Carol Kilpatrick and Barb Austin. Mae Johnson also attended the quilt day.

Barb Austin spoke about purchasing flags for the poles on upper West Main Street. Following much discussion, members voted to do so. Hopefully that will be done by July 4. Local businesses will be asked to participate and anyone wishing to contribute to the flags can contact Austin. Pat Jones suggested in the future all projects have a chairman.
The meeting was adjourned and the annual meeting began with reports for the year being given. Kilpatrick presented the budget for 2015-16. After much discussion it was accepted. Jones, auditor, reported the books were all in order.
