PRYMCA Waves compete at championship swim meet

    ORONO — The Piscataquis Regional YMCA Waves visited the Wallace Pool on the University of Maine campus on March 2-3 to compete against Y teams from all across the state. The state meet is organized with seven different gender and age groups running at different times throughout the weekend.

Y CHAMPIONSHIP — Triston Green of Sebec competes at the Y state championship meet with the PRYMCA Waves at the University of Maine of March 2-3.

    The Waves had one swimmer with first-place finishes as Jenna Clukey came in first in the 50 back and the 100 IM. Clukey also had a second-place finish in the 50 fly, breaking her own team record with a time of 28:84.
    Other second-place finishes were Julia Annis in the 100 breast, breaking another team record with a time of 1:08.24 and Avery Carroll in the 100 free.  The Waves had several third-place finishes including Carroll in the 200 IM, Annis in the 50 back and Molly Foley in the 200 free.
    The top eight swimmers in each event receive trophies for their efforts. These swimmers include the above swimmers along with Jillian Annis for her fifth-place finish in the 50 free, Foley for a sixth-place finish in the 100 free, Gabie Johnson for her fifth-place finish in the 100 breast and sixth place in the 200 IM and the 15 and up 200 free relay team of Julia Annis, Carroll, Johnson and Foley with a fourth-place finish and the team record with a time of 1:47.38.
    Swimmers finishing in the top 16 score points for their respective teams.
    All the above swimmers scored points for the Waves along with Clay Carroll, 11th place in the 50 free and ninth place in the 100 free; Triston Green, 15th place in the 50 back; and Wyatt Rayfield with 12th place finishes in both the 25 and 50 free.
    Waves swimmers with personal best times at the meet were Jillian Annis, Jasmine Sanchez, Wyatt Rayfield, Ian Blackstone, Wyatt Blackstone, Payton Barbaro, Alyssa Boyd, Clukey, Erica Cole, Green, Avery Carroll, Clay Carroll, Abby Henderson, Abby Kemp, Rachel Mullis, Alec Oelschlegel, Ava Rayfield,  Amy Waugh and Chloe Waugh.
    The swimmer taking off the most time from their previous best time gets recognized as the “Biggest Loser.” The swimmer taking the most time off a previous best time during the state meet was Green. Green was on fire taking the most time off a single event by reducing his time in the 100 free by an amazing 9.49 seconds.
    Honorable mention for “Biggest Loser” was Amy Waugh for taking an incredible 8.12 seconds off her 50 back.  Both these swimmers were the “Biggest Loser” for the whole meet with Green taking a total of 16.87 off his three events, while Waugh took 11.58 seconds off her three events. Sanchez was also recognized for taking 9.23 off the two events she swam.
    For the most part the Waves Y swim team is finished swimming for the season with an awards banquet to be held in April. So far the Waves team has one swimmer, Julia Annis, swimming at Y Nationals to be held in Greensboro, N.C. from April 3-6.
