Mayo Regional Hospital establishes weekly cardiology clinic

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Following the announcement of Mayo Regional Hospital Cardiologist Dr. Kathleen Harper’s acceptance of a position in Lewiston, Mayo Regional Hospital will be establishing a weekly cardiology clinic in collaboration with St. Joseph Hospital beginning in July. The weekly clinic will allow patients to continue to seek cardiology services locally while maintaining testing and other procedures at Mayo Regional Hospital.

Over the last 18 months, Mayo’s Cardiologist Dr. Harper has put a great deal of energy into establishing a practice at Mayo Regional Hospital and has been well received in the community. However, a full time cardiologist at a critical access hospital is not a common model and is difficult to sustain. Cardiology is a specialty that is typically based in larger urban centers with a team of specialists. “We recognize Dr. Harper’s transition to a team of cardiologists with the support of a larger practice is an opportunity for her professional growth and we wish her the very best,” stated Marie Vienneau, Mayo’s president and CEO.
Mayo will be adjusting the staffing and hours of their Heartwise Cardiac Rehab program to cover the current volumes and Heartwise will remain open in the same location Monday, Wednesday and Friday. “Although there will be some changes in cardiology services and scheduling here at Mayo, we are very pleased to announce that St. Joseph Cardiology has committed to support us with a weekly clinic beginning July 2015. We are excited about this new collaboration,” said Vienneau.
Patients wishing to establish with clinic cardiologists Dr. Vrinda Sardana and Dr. Scott Deron can see them in Bangor prior to the July clinic start date if they wish. Mayo has hired a new nurse practitioner, Sarah Matulis, to cover the cardiac stress tests in the hospital two mornings a week as well as working at Dexter Family Practice.
Current patients at Mayo Cardiology should follow up with their primary care provider to determine the best arrangement for their cardiology needs. For questions or for more information, please call Mayo Cardiology at 564-1234.
