Champeon to be inducted into hall of fame

BANGOR — Former Greenville High School and University of Maine star Wayne Champeon will be among inductees into the Class of 2015 of the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame. Champeon and the 28 other inductees into the hall’s second class had their names announced by Selection Committee Chair Tony Hamlin — a Milo resident who won over 400 games in his own high school coaching career — during press conferences on Feb. 11 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor and Portland Expo.

Champeon was a 5-foot-7 wiz on the hardwood. The Greenville native led Greenville High School to the state championship in 1956. Champeon played at the University of Maine on what many consider its greatest teams with Skip Chappelle, Don Sturgeon and Laddy Demer. Champeon was the sparkplug point guard who’s quickness and guile with the ball drove opponents crazy.
After his playing days were over, Champeon coached at both Greenville High School and Foxcroft Academy.
Champeon and his fellow 2015 Maine Basketball Hall of Fame inductees will be formally inducted during an Aug. 23 ceremony at the Cross Insurance Center.
