Credit union representatives address GFWC/Miosac Club on fraud prevention

    DOVER-FOXCROFT — The GFWC/Miosac Club met on Nov. 18 at Thayer Parkway with 14 members and one guest present. Roxy McGlauflin introduced Diane Parola, vice-president of marketing/technology and Adam Sheehan, executive vice-president of Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union.

    Sheehan spoke of the many scams and frauds that people are using to gain access to other people’s money and information. He urged everyone to always check their statements; and if there is something wrong, call the financial institution as soon as possible. There is a certain window when they can get your money back.
    Craig’s List can be fraudulent and money grams are being forged. On-line banking offers some protection and securities. There are about 10 scams going on right now. Be careful with phone calls.
    Parola reiterated Sheehan’s statements and she spoke of the credit union’s project Ending Hunger in Maine. They have several fund raising activities throughout the year and all the money goes to support food banks. It was a very informative program.
    President Vicki Moschella opened the meeting. Elaine Larson led the club collect, American’s Creed and the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. In the absence of Secretary Cathie Goodine, Minnie McCormick took roll call and read the secretary’s report which was accepted as read. Treasurer Carol Kilpatrick gave the treasurers report, with two associate members paying dues. Suzanne Raymond was welcomed as a new member. Suzanne has belonged to Cosmopolitan Club but the club is not able to carry on after over 100 years.
    Corresponding secretary Roxy McGlauflin read thank-you notes from State Arts Chairman Barbara Hathaway for our donation; Maine State Youth Leadership Chair Gloria Tewhey for a Maine Youth Leadership donation; and state CARE chairman Gloria Leveilee and Suzanne Raymond of Dover-Foxcroft Housing for our contribution
    Carol Kilpatrick reported on the scholarship noting that applications are ready and can be issued at anytime.
    Vicki Moschella reported on the posters for elder abuse awareness, Vicki is rotating the posters and encouraging members to make more. Mae Johnson made two.
    Money for the Kiwanis Community Christmas Campaign was collected with a total of $250. The club also budgets for $50, so a total of $300 will be used to buy items for children for Christmas. Volunteers will help Barb shop.
    Vicki mentioned the volunteer sheets need to be totaled and handed in for reporting purposes. A new sheet will be available at the first January meeting. Vicki also handed out information on International Outreach. Members will study that and decide later which ones they would like to participate in. Care Chairman Gloria Leveillee issued a challenge to all clubs.
    State Public Issues Chairman Minnie McCormick reported on Shoe Boxes for Spouses of military personnel. Boxes of cosmetic products, cards, gums. books, etc will be sent to an APEX address and will be distributed as needed. They can be for male or female. Roxy reported that she clips coupons, gets them to the Sangerville Grange who then sends them off to be used by military spouses.
    The next meeting will be a Christmas party, The new club year starts Tuesday, Jan. 6 with a “Crazy Hats Game Night.”
