Unitarian Church to honor Penobscot culture

SANGERVILLE — Please join the Unitarian Universalist Church of Sangerville & Dover-Foxcroft on Sunday, Nov. 26 at 9:30 a.m. for a service honoring Penobscot culture. The message and music described below will be followed by a coffee hour. All are welcome.

Jane Neptune is the widow of Arnie Neptune, who was the spiritual leader of the Penobscot people. She lived for nearly 10 years with Arnie on Indian Island, the ancestral homeland of the Penobscot Nation, and will be speaking about Native American spirituality. This will be a follow up from a  previous talk on Native American spirituality given last spring. We will be honored with the musical guests, Timbered Lake and Wind and Stone. 

Singer-songwriter Diana Newman and poet Crow Suncloud joined creative forces in 2003 to become the Maine-based indie/folk duo Timbered  Lake (www.timberedlake.com). Crow complements Diana’s acoustic guitar playing with the rhythms of indigenous drums and rattles. Timbered Lake’s luminous vocal harmonies give melodic lift to visionary lyrics offered in service to Mother Earth, peacemaking, community, and healing. Timbered Lake’s newest album “World Undivided” features all original compositions.  

Cheryl Dixon & Tammy Clair are retired singers of the Wind & Stone duo. Together they sang and wrote Native American inspired music. While both honor their indigenous ancestry, neither are enrolled members with any tribe. It is through their love and connection with the Native American culture and its people that they work to be an ally in order to create awareness for issues that all Native Americans have had and continue to face.
