Bangor Savings Bank Foundation awards $5,000 for Friends of Community Fitness studio
GUILFORD — Friends of Community Fitness has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Bangor Savings Bank Foundation to support opening a new fitness studio and adding equipment. This expansion will allow the purchase of an Octane recumbent elliptical needed for the Healthy4Life program as well as adding several new programs free for members.
Healthy4Life is a fitness program specifically geared towards community members that have health concerns that may hinder them from traditional exercise classes. The program has outgrown its current space since beginning in 2021. Friends of Community Fitness is truly appreciative of the support from the Bangor Savings Bank Foundation to continue this important work. The following testimonials are a snapshot of the incredible impact this program has in the lives of its members.
“This class has inspired me, increased my stamina and mood. It’s helped my body to get going again. I can now vacuum my downstairs without having to take breaks or my husband worrying about my health. This class has helped me be able to move better and I’ve lost 12 pounds” said C.G.
“They let me do what I can and it’s made my legs stronger. It keeps me moving. I can stand up better and I’m not falling as much. It helped my balance and strength to be able to grab the sideboard when I tripped this morning. I really like the exercises and being with the people in class. I’ve lost over 20 pounds,” said C.B.
“I have severe COPD and am oxygen dependent. I look forward to Tuesday and Thursday classes because it makes it easier to get me out of the house. I live alone, in isolation, and I look forward to the social aspect and coming to see everyone. When I started, I wanted to improve my physical strength so I can do things I enjoy in the summer like being outside and fishing. When I go to my pulmonologist next month, I want to show him I’m in better shape so I might be a candidate for surgery,” said Danny M.
Update, Danny was informed that his health has improved enough that he is now a transplant candidate. He contributes this to attending Healthy4Life!
“I feel 10 years younger! I’m in much less pain, actually almost none. It’s changed my life. I totaled my truck last year. I blacked out due to my blood sugars and rolled it over. I injured my shoulder, hip, knee and broke lots of ribs. This class helped me in my recovery. It helps keep my blood sugars stable. It’s helped me with arm strength and balance. I purchased a side-by-side. I can now climb in and out safely, have the strength and mobility to drive it and can even lift my great granddaughter. I like the people and events,” said Keith.
