Center Theatre announces ‘Spooky Movie Day’
DOVER-FOXCROFT — In honor of Halloween, the Center Theatre is dubbing Saturday, Nov. 1, “Spooky Movie Day.” The day will feature two different takes on the horror genre.
At 2 PM, audiences can experience the silent film “The Phantom Of The Opera” (1925) starring Lon Chaney. This movie will be shown as it was originally intended — with live musical accompaniment. Doug Protsik, director of Maine Fiddle Camp, will play the piano accompaniment using an original score he has created for the film. Protsik’s enthusiasm for silent movies has led him to work composing and recording original scores for silent film restorations for the Turner Classic Movies cable network.
It is a uniquely Halloween experience, and people are encouraged to wear costumes if desired. While Phantom is a horror film, the degree of “horror” would be rated G by today’s standards, and is fine for all ages.
At 7 PM, audiences will be treated to a more modern take on horror films with “Damnationland”. “Damnationland” presents genre-defying original works from Maine filmmakers that redefine the classic thriller and horror categories.
Now in its fifth year, the “Damnationland” 2014 program will feature world premieres of six short films produced in Maine by Mainers especially for the Halloween season. These are dark, surreal, and fantastic pieces, and they offer film fans an excellent sampling of the talent producing independent film in Maine today. In less than two weeks into the 2014 tour, the films are a hit all over the state.
