Second round of elevated garden beds distributed

DEXTER — Dexter Age Friendly has just distributed another 30 garden beds to area seniors. The construction of the beds was made possible by a gift from Skowhegan Savings Bank and Maine Community Foundation.

Locally purchased cedar lumber was delivered to the building trades program at Tri-CountyTechnical Center. Instructor Jim Philbrick supervised his students in the construction of the beds which were completed in mid-May. The beds were delivered by Town Manager Trampas King to their new owners along with soil and a coupon for free seedlings from a local nursery.

Gardening benefits people through physical activity in the open air, mentally through nurturing growing plants, and socially through contacts with other gardeners. These beds which are raised up on legs are a great assist for those no longer able to do “hands and knees” gardening.

It took a town full of willing hearts and hands to build these beds. DAF would like to thank all the generous volunteers who worked on the project: Philbrick, the students at TCTC, King, Liz Breault, Ace Hardware, Spring Street Greenhouse and most importantly, Skowhegan Savings Bank and Maine Community Foundation.
