BJHS Alumni Association 2022 scholarship awards

BROWNVILLE – The annual meeting of Brownville Junction High School was held on Friday, Aug. 19. At this year’s meeting it was decided to award all 17 applicants scholarships. The amount of the awards presented totals $34,000 as each scholarship given is for $2,000. 

Seventeen completed applications were received this year. Thirteen of the applications are from current college students and four are from high school seniors. One of our applicants is pursuing a doctorate degree. There are five students this year who are entering the medical field. The grade point averages of all applicants ranged from 4.3 to 2.98. The highest GPA again this year comes from a high school senior. As always, according to the guidelines, scholarships will be awarded based on cumulative grade point averages.

Scholarships may be awarded to the grand- and great-grand children including step relatives of all BJHS Alumni members in good standing, including graduates of Penquis Valley. Here are the named scholarships given by the association: the BJHS Alumni and Allen B. Lente Scholarships are given to high school seniors, the Greta Connors Scholarship is awarded to a student in a four-year college program and the Margaret Law Scholarship is given to a student in the medical field. The Henry & Annie Graves Scholarship, the Eleanor Rosebush Scholarship, and the Don Stiles Scholarship are open to all applicants. 

This year’s scholarship will be awarded as follows:

This year there will be five Law Scholarships awarded to students entering the medical field. The first recipient is Jordan Durant of Brownville. She is the granddaughter of Whit & Linda Coburn and Barbie Durant. She attends Husson University and is majoring in physical therapy..

Trevor Lyford of Norfolk, Virginia who is attending Eastern Virginia Medical School to pursue his MD will also receive a Law Scholarship. He is the son of Marilyn Zwicker Lyford and the grandson of Eli & Beverly Zwicker.

Lauren Morrill of Bradley will receive a Law Scholarship. She is the granddaughter of Larry & Donna Morrill. Lauren attends Husson University and is studying nursing.

The final two Law Scholarships are going to high school seniors. Madison E. Coover of Sebec is the daughter of Kylie Rendzia (a Penquis graduate). She plans to attend Husson University and will also be studying nursing.

The last Law Scholarship is awarded to Gavin Murphy from Easton who is the grandson of Charlene Kenney Buzza. Gavin plans to attend the University of Rhode Island and will pursue a career in pharmacy.

Two scholarships are specifically dedicated to high school seniors.

The BJHS Scholarship is awarded to Gracie Lynn Moore who lives in Portland. Gracie is the granddaughter of Rod Blue and graduated from Maine Central Institute; she plans to attend Bentley University to study business.

Abigail Hogan, who resides in Glenburn and is the granddaughter of William Hogan, graduated from John Bapst Memorial High School. She plans to attend Husson University to study criminal justice.

Three scholarships are open to all students who apply:

The Greta Connors Scholarship is awarded to a student attending a four-year college. This year’s recipient Faith Sickler of Brownville. Faith is attending the University of Maine. She is studying studio art. Her BJHS connections are Dodie & Jackie Coburn.

Jeremy Martin of LaGrange attends Husson University and is majoring in hospitality and tourism management. Jeremy is the grandson of Donald Martin, Sr. He also is awarded the Greta Connors Scholarship.

Kiran Morrill of Bradley, granddaughter of Larry & Donna Morrill is attending the University of Maine, studying marine sciences. She, too, will receive a Connors Scholarship.

One Henry and Annie Graves Scholarship is awarded to Jennah M. Lyford. Jennah is a resident of Hampden and is the great-granddaughter of Elmer Cunningham. She attends the University of Maine, studying business and marketing.

A second Henry and Annie Graves Scholarship is awarded to Zakary Mills of LaGrange who attends Husson University majoring in mass communications and sports journalism. He is the son of Jason & Andrea Mills and great-grandson of Emma Lockhart Barker who graduated from BJHS.

Two Eleanor Rosebush Scholarships will be awarded this year.

Lydia F. Chase of Veazie, granddaughter of David Chase and great-granddaughter of Violet Grant, attends Maine Maritime Academy majoring in international business and logistics.

The second Rosebush Scholarship is awarded to Del Bonsu-Anane of Peterborough, New Hampshire who is the grandson of Kay Chase Whitney and the great-grandson of Guilford & Annie Chase. Del is attending North Carolina State University majoring in marketing.

Three Don Stiles Scholarships are being awarded this year. The first is to Triston Green of Sebec, grandson of Allan and Lillian McLean. He attends the University of Maine-Machias and is studying marine science.

A second Stiles Scholarship is awarded to Joshua Martin of LaGrange. Joshua is the grandson of Donald Martin, Sr. and attends Husson University. He is studying school counseling.

Sapphira Murphey of Williamsburg Township will also receive a Stiles Scholarship. Sapphira is the granddaughter of Charlene Kenney Buzza. She attends EMMC and is studying career studies.

We are blessed to have young people associated with graduates of Brownville Junction High School  and Penquis Valley High School who are such excellent scholars and are working diligently to achieve their goals.
