Race to End Domestic Violence June 22

    DEXTER — The 4th annual Amy, Coty, Monica Memorial 5K Race/Walk and Vendor Fair to End Domestic Violence in Maine will be held on Sunday, June 22 at Dexter Regional High School. Registration will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and the runners will start promptly at 9 a.m. with walkers following.

    There will be also be a T-shirt pick up and registration day on Saturday, June 21 from 10 a.m. – noon at the high school lobby for those who have pre-registered and want to get their shirts early.
    The race-walk is in memory of Amy Lake and her children, Coty and Monica, who were killed on June 13, 2011 by her estranged husband, Steven, who then took his own life. Amy Lake was a kindergarten teacher at Ridge View Community School.
    The route for the race this year will be the same as last year which in the shape of a domestic violence ribbon. There will also be electronic timing for runners and any walkers who wish to be timed again this year.
    The Darling’s ice cream truck will also be on site to hand out free ice cream for participants, but anyone can make a voluntary donation which will also be turned over to the committee.
    The Dexter Fire Department will also have their lunch wagon at the site, and there will be whoopie pies for sale as well as raffle tickets from other vendors.
    Those who don’t wish to run or walk can still support the cause by shopping at the vendors’ fair or eating lunch at the school grounds.
    There will be prizes for the top adult male and female finishers, the top boy and girl winners and top sponsor collector. If the race is cancelled due to extreme weather conditions, there will be no make-up date and no refunds.
    More than 600 people participated in last year’s run-walk. Greg Leavitt of Glenburn was the overall top finisher in the run with a time of 21 minutes, 46 seconds while Erin Rhoda of Bangor finished first among the women — and fourth overall — with a time of 25 minutes and 8.4 seconds.
    Funds from previous events have been donated to Womancare of Dover-Foxcroft, a scholarship in honor of the Lake family and a fund to pay for electronic monitoring of domestic abusers.
