American Legion Post 29 hosts Vietnam recognition dinner

    DOVER-FOXCROFT — American Legion Post 29 of Dover-Foxcroft hosted a dinner honoring all veterans from Dover-Foxcroft who served in the armed forces during the Vietnam Warera.
    The Legion’s special guest was retired Col. Peter Ogden, director of the Bureau of Veterans Services. Col. Ogden presented a brief overview of the Vietnam War and the role that Maine veterans played in the conflict.

    Col. Ogden then thanked all the veterans in attendance for their service to their country during the war. Colonel Ogden presented each veteran with a certificate and a coin who served their country from 1961-75.
    The highlight of the evening was the honoring of Gregory Sloat, Richard Dority and Johnson Meade, the three Dover-Foxcroft residents who did not return home from the war.
    Colonel Ogden presented a Gold Star to Clairice Call, the mother of Sloat and to Delmar Dority, the mother of Dority. A Gold Star for Johnson Meade will be presented to his sister Ruth Sally, by the Legion at a later date.
    Bart Merrill the dinner organizer then thanked Col. Ogden, the members of Post 29 and everyone else who made this event so successful. Merrill then thanked all the veterans who attended. “We were honored to have two Gold Star mothers in attendance” he added.
