Foxcroft Academy presents Rose Awards to 15 seniors

    DOVER-FOXCROFT — Foxcroft Academy honored the Class of 2014’s outstanding scholars at its annual Rose Award ceremony on the afternoon of May 13. This year’s recipients are Katherine Buerger, Jiani Chen, Qiqi Dong, Blake Dyer, Shanyu Guo, Zhaojing Ji, Samuel Keane, Myung Jin Kim, Hyun Jae Lee, Jiayao Lin, Landon Page, Travis Vincent, Leah Word, Yuqing Zhang and Tianqi Zhuang.

ROSE AWARD RECIPIENTS — Fifteen members of Class of 2014 at Foxcroft Academy were recently presented with Rose Awards, indicating they are in the top 15 percent of their class.     The Rose Awards were established in 1931 when Frank G. Stone was head of Foxcroft Academy. Rose Award recipients have accumulated a GPA that places them in the top 15 percent of permanent students in their class. For the 29th consecutive year, a medallion with the Foxcroft Academy seal will be presented to the recipients in addition to the traditional rose. These medallions were presented May 17 in conjunction with the induction ceremony for the third class of the Foxcroft Academy Academic Hall of Fame.
    Priscilla White, former English teacher and librarian who retired after 36 years of service, and Robert Beek, who taught mathematics for 33 years, conceived the idea for this permanent award and contributed funds to have the die cast for the medallion, which has now become a permanent part of the annual ceremony.
    Katherine Buerger, daughter of Ned Garner and Barbara Buerger, is president of the National Honor Society and Latin Club; is the principle cellist for the FA Orchestra, the FA String Ensemble, and the Bangor Symphony Youth Orchestra; and has been a member of the Asian Culture Club for four years. She intends to major in both accounting and English at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
    Jiani Chen, daughter of Xinwei Chen and Renjuan Li, has been a member of the Asian Culture Club, Key Club, and swimming team. She plans to study marketing at Michigan State University.
    Qiqi Dong, daughter of Yunbo Dong and Huiqiong Ma, is secretary of the Asian Culture Club and a member of Key Club, Art Club, Spanish Club, and Environmental Club. She plans to study communications at the University of California, San Diego. 
    Blake Dyer, daughter of John and Briana Dyer, is a member of the National Honor Society, has served on Student Council for three years, and competed for the swimming team for two years. She plans to study Biochemistry at the University of Maine.
    Selina Guo, daughter of Weidong Guo and Jinghua Li, is president of Key Club, captain of the cheering team, and a member of the National Honor Society and tennis team. She also served as secretary of Student Council her junior year and sang for the Select Choir for three years. She will attend Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C. and plans to pursue a career in dentistry.
    Floria Ji, daughter of Jianjun Ji and Fengjie Cheng, is the salutatorian of the Class of 2014. She is co-president of Spanish Club, secretary of the National Honor Society and Key Club, and a member of Student Council, Asian Culture Club, and Art Club. Ji will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she intends to study human resources and management.
    Samuel Keane, son of Gary and Terri Keane, is the valedictorian of the Class of 2014. He is president of Student Council and the senior class; captained the soccer, basketball, and tennis teams this year; and is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, and Latin Club. Sam intends to study international business and marketing at Fordham University in Bronx, N.Y.
    Julia Kim, daughter of SungWoo Kim and MiYo Jung, played clarinet and saxophone in the FA Band and Orchestra and was a member of Key Club and Art Club. She plans to major in product design and is still waiting to make a decision on which school she will attend.
    Daniel Lee, son of Kang Hak Lee and Kyunk Sook Chung, is president of the Dance Club, is a member of National Honor Society and Dorm Council, and has served as a dorm proctor for three years. He plans to study psychology and economics at the University of Rochester in New York state.
    Jiayao Lin, daughter of YueZhong Lin and MingQin Rong, is a member of the Asian Culture Club, Art Club, and Cooking Club. She will be attending Michigan State University, where she plans to study either marketing or international trading.
    Landon Page, son of Stephen and Hope Page, is a member of the National Honor Society, the FA Band and Orchestra, and the Asian Culture Club, and he earned first place in the Chinese Bridge Speech Competition as a junior. Page will be enlisting in the U.S. Air Force and plans to study business and computer science.
    Travis Vincent, son of Timothy and Vicki Vincent, is a member of the National Honor Society, Select Choir, Jazz Band, Orchestra, and Math Team, and he acted in the school musical this year. He will be attending the University of Maine and intends to study computer science.
    Leah Word, daughter of Thomas and Laurie Word, is a member of the National Honor Society, Select Choir, Key Club, and Latin Club, and she has acted in the school musical the last three years. Leah plans to study neuropsychology at the University of New England in Biddeford.
    Ivy Zhang, daughter of Shixin Zhang and Shufeng Wang, is the National Honor Society treasurer, the Art Club president, the Asian Culture Club vice president, and the Key Club bulletin editor. She will be attending UCLA, where she plans to study economics and psychology.
    Tianqi Zhuang, daughter of Haidao Zhuang and Xiaofang Wang, is captain of the Math Team, president of the Asian Culture Club, and a member of National Honor Society, Key Club, Art Club, Spanish Club, and Student Council. She plans to study business but has yet to decide which school she will attend next year.
