First Friday discussion to focus on education

DEXTER — Because training our young people to understand the world around them is such an important task, the April 4 version of Dexter Dover Area Towns in Transition’s (DDATT) First Friday public discussion will be on “Education: how well are our schools working?” at 7 p.m. in the Abbott Memorial Library basement meeting room.

Matthew Drewette-Card, curriculum coordinator at AOS 94 will begin the evening by describing the Common Core state standards and then a facilitated public discussion will follow.
Maine State Statute LD 1422 requires that all schools develop a system of proficiency-based learning. The discussion forum will tackle defining proficiency and what it means for students, teachers, parents and our community.
The evening will cover “myths and facts” of the Common Core State Standards, and questions about the impact and changes the Common Core will have on community, schools, teachers, students and families.
DDATT is concerned that everyone, young and old and in-between, increase our understanding about the economic, environmental and social effects of all forms of energy use on communities. Schools are an important part of that education, and the organization hopes the public will come share your perspectives at this meeting.
