Northern Light Mayo Hospital announces Chase as 2020 Nurse of the Year

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Northern Light Mayo Hospital’s Nurse Excellence Award is a public commendation given to a staff nurse demonstrating exemplary clinical expertise, commitment to Northern Light Mayo Hospital and continued professional development. This award is given annually by the vice president of patient care services.

“This year there were 10 nurses who were nominated which is a true testament to the caliber of Mayo’s Nurses” said Denise Scuderi, vice president of patient care services. Congratulations to each of the nominees: Nick Cannon, Tricia Sherman, Janet Burrill, John Chase, Lisa Murray, Beth Weatherbee, Stephanie Dankert, Kristen Belote, Sue McKinley and Deb Ross. You should all be very proud!

John Chase, RN

Scuderi announced Chase, RN, as the 2020 Northern Light Mayo Nurse of the Year on Thursday, May 14 during an all-staff Zoom meeting. Chase’s colleagues had some great things to say about him. He is a pleasure to work with and keeps the department positive. Chase is always calm, collected and informative while continuing to have a thirst for knowledge which is contagious to others. He is a very experienced Med Surg nurse. He is a natural leader, teacher, and all around a great person. He is consistently mentioned by patients and family members for excellent care. Chase has a way of connecting with each patient and engaging them in their care while still taking time to make sure that they understand their diagnosis and medications. He is also known as the “premier preceptor” for the unit for students and new hires. Chase is a dedicated and dependable member of the team and is always in a good mood and known for his quirky sense of humor.

“Thank you for this honor. I truly did not realize how highly my colleagues thought of me. I do my best to keep a positive attitude on the floor. I am very passionate about patient education and making sure that my patients understand their patients and treatment. I really thank you for this honor,” he said after receiving the award.

“We had an exceptional group of nominees this year. We are fortunate to have a great team that is packed with integrity, compassion, accountability, and respect delivering great care to the patients of our communities” said Marie Vienneau, president of Northern Light Mayo Hospital.

A special congratulations should be extended to Kirsty Pratly, RN and Lindsay Pelletier, PharmD who were nominated by their peers as Hospital Week Heroes. This year National Hospital Week was celebrated a little differently. We took some time to really think about the amount of dedication and work that our peers are putting in daily to keep our staff and patients safe during this time and nominated our peers. These recipients were chosen by the senior leaders of the organization.

“We are thankful to have the team we have here at Mayo Hospital. It was hard to choose just two. They are all heroes in our eyes,” Vienneau said.
