Martin and Sipple record top three performances at conference track finals
ORONO — Foxcroft Academy junior Logan Martin had a hand in 16 of his team’s 18 points during the 2020 Penobscot Valley Conference/Eastern Maine Indoor Track League Small School Championship on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the University of Maine.
Martin came in second in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, 3.5 inches. Ellsworth High School junior Beck Deeny finished first at 20-04.
In the 55-meter finals, Martin had the fourth-best time of the competition at 6.98 seconds. He also anchored the fourth-place 4×200 relay as senior Hunter Clarke, junior Izaak Krause and senior Cole Edgerly preceded Martin and together they ran the event in 1:44.71.
Sophomore Jacob Reed scored the other two points for Foxcroft by placing fifth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-06.
The 18 points put the Ponies in eighth place among 10 point-scoring schools. Ellsworth earned the Small School title with a score of 143 points, Orono High School was second at 100 and in third place was Central High School of Corinth with 63 points.
Foxcroft had entrants in several other events. Clarke came in seventh in the 200 at 24.89 seconds and he was 10th in the 55-meter prelims at 7.26 seconds. Krause and Edgerly were 17th and 18th in the prelims with respective times of 7.58 and 7.81 seconds.
Reed placed 11th in the long jump at a distance of 16 feet, 3.25 inches.
In the girls’ meet, Piscataquis Community High School freshman Molly Sipple had the third-best performance in the 55-meter finals. She sprinted a time of 7.92 seconds.
Sipple’s third-place finish accounted for the six PCHS points as the Pirates tied Narraguagus High School of Harrington for seventh place among 10 schools in the team standings.
The girls from Bucksport High School won the Small School championship with 120 points, ahead of the 106 for Orono High School and Ellsworth’s 55.
Two Foxcroft girls took part on Saturday. Sophomore Makayla Landry came in eighth in the long jump with a distance of 12 feet, 8.25 inches and freshman Lauren Martin was 12th in the shot put with a heave measuring 20-08.75.
