Mayo Regional Hospital kicks off holiday season with annual tree lighting ceremony

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Through the generous contributions of local-area businesses, Mayo Regional Hospital’s Auxiliary/Volunteer organization launched the holiday season with its annual tree-lighting ceremony on Dec. 9. Volunteers and staff came together to sing carols and share refreshments while witnessing the  lighting of the roof top tree at the main entry.

Mayo’s Auxiliary/Volunteer group is a vital part of the hospital. In addition to providing services such as manning the information desk and transporting patients to departments, they have done an amazing job of raising substantial funds  through a myriad of grass root efforts which has aided the hospital in the purchase of critical equipment.
The success of the fundraising is due to the community’s strong participation at events such as craft fairs, Bingo games, bake sales and other events. The much-needed dollars have helped purchase a variety of items ranging from basic stretchers to sophisticated electronic equipment used in the operating room. “Through the help of the community we are able to raise tens of thousands of dollars each year so we can remain a state-of-the-art rural hospital,” says Lillian Smith who heads up the Volunteer and Auxiliary organizations. “We are grateful for the community’s support.”
The hospital is always looking for volunteers to lend a helping hand. High school students are encouraged to volunteer for credit, and citizens looking to engage with the hospital community are always appreciated. For volunteer opportunities contact Smith at 564-4427.
