Selectmen approve plan to fix leaky town office roof

DOVER-FOXCROFT — A mop bucket should no longer be needed in the future to catch water dripping from the ceiling in the main lobby of the Morton Avenue Municipal Building as the selectmen approved a plan to remedy the situation during an Nov. 25 meeting.

“We have kind of battled a leak and we are putting together a plan to deal with it,” Town Manager Jack Clukey said. Clukey said a proposal was made by the G&E Roofing Co. of Augusta to fix three sections of the roof, starting with the area over the lobby.
“The bigger issue is we are going to have to address all these roof sections at some point,” Clukey said, adding these other repairs could be made over the ensuing few years. Under the plan G&E Roofing — who worked at Foxcroft Academy over the summer and were highly recommended to Dover-Foxcroft officials — provided a quote of $42,793 for fixing the roof over and adjacent to the lobby area.
The plan also addresses two sections of the roof on the northern wing of the building, which also are near the end of the life cycle. Quotes for these two sections were $76,229 and $28,400, which can be reduced slightly pending several conditions. The project was divided into three parts for budgetary reasons.
“We do have a new fire truck, that’s here,” Clukey said in other business. In October the selectmen approved the purchase of a new fire truck to replace a 1989 model. The new truck is comprised of a body new from the factory, built on a 2011 chassis, at a cost of $257,000 from K&T Fire Equipment in Island Falls.
“The other one’s going to Bowerbank,” Clukey said, as that community is purchasing the 1989 fire truck from Dover-Foxcroft.
“You might remember last year we agreed to lease the parcel on the Landfill Road to Scott Lander for one year; he’s interested in extending that,” Clukey said. The selectmen voted to continue the lease agreement for the next calendar year at a rate of $100 a month. Lander has been using the former Grant lot, located across the road from the Verso wood yard, for parking truck trailers.
The Landfill Road has been re-graded by the public works department, Clukey said in his town manager’s report. The plan is to get surface gravel on the travelway in the spring.
Clukey said the selectmen were given a copy of a booklet being put together for residents who have recently moved to town. He also provided certificates for the selectmen to sign recognizing town employees who have reached a milestone anniversary in 2013. The plan is to continue such recognitions each year moving forward.
Santa Claus is scheduled to be at the fire station on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 5:15 p.m. as part of the annual Hometown Holidays celebration. Santa Claus will arrive via a parade starting up West Main Street at Foxcroft Academy at 5 p.m. Hometown Holidays will feature events throughout the day in five area communities.
