Father, daughter escape safely from Sebec Lake boat fire

BOAT FIRE ON SEBEC LAKE — A father and daughter escaped a boat fire without injury on Sebec Lake at the Tim Merrill & Co. marina in Dover-Foxcroft shortly after noon on Tuesday, Aug. 6. According to WVII, the Bayliner boat owned is by Paul Edgerly of Kenduskeag. After fueling Edgerly was backing up with his 15-year-old daughter on board when they heard a loud bang from the inboard motor compartment, which blew the cover off and ignited the boat. Edgerly told his daughter to jump out, while he stayed on until eventually jumping off himself once the boat floated further on the water. Marina owner Tim Merrill told NEWS CENTER Maine he jumped in his boat and pushed the burning vessel away from two other craft it was drifting toward. The boat on fire floated several hundred yards before members of the Dover-Foxcroft Fire Department towed the craft closer to shore within range of their truck hose as firefighters were then able to put out the blaze. Crews from Sebec and Bowerbank fire departments, joined by the Maine DEP and Maine Warden Service, assisted at the scene. A post on the Dover-Foxcroft Police Facebook page read, “Close one at the marina today. Glad everyone is safe. The boat …… well not so much.”
