Last sessions of Families in the Outdoors
DOVER-FOXCROFT — The Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District has opened registration for final sessions in its popular Families in the Outdoors series. Families in the Outdoors was started in 2018 from a grant received by the Davis Conservation Foundation. The goal of this program is to engage with families outdoors and provide fun, educational opportunities to learn and play together.
The third session of Families in the Outdoors is “Bugs!” and it will be held at the Law Farm in Dover-Foxcroft from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 24. This session will be led by district staff, Amy Polyot from the Penobscot County Soil and Water Conservation District and Charlene from the Maine Entomological Society. Together attendees will learn about all kinds of Maine bugs – the good, the bad and the very strange looking. Participants will build-a-bug and venture into the woods and waters to see what bugs they can find.
The final session is “Rocks, Gems & Dirt!” This event will take place at the Law Farm from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14. District staff will be joined by guest Fred Krone of Northern Maine Minerals in Greenville. Krone is going to be bringing all kinds of interesting rocks, crystals and fossils to check out, will talk about the tools used to find these neat specimens, how to find special rocks in and lead us a fun fossil-finding activity. If that wasn’t enough, district staff will have you looking at dirt in a whole new way – teaching that soil is life, has several textures and colors and so much more.
Bring the kids, grandchildren or even a family friend and enjoy the great outdoors. This program is recommended for adults and children ages 5-plus.
