Every 15 Minutes coming to Penquis Valley

MILO — The impaired driving simulation event “Every 15 Minutes” comes to the Penquis Valley School on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 7-8. Every 15 Minutes is a two-day program which demonstrates to high school students the impact drinking and driving (as well as distracted driving) has on friends, family and their community.

The first day of the impaired driving event begins with pre-selected and screened students being removed one by one from class every 15 minutes to symbolize that a life is lost every 15 minutes due to impaired driving. Those students are made up to represent the living dead.

That afternoon, a simulated accident scene involving the impaired driver/s and victims will occur on school grounds. Like a true accident, emergency medical services, fire department, police, etc. will arrive at the scene and respond in an appropriate manner. Students will be called out to view the mock accident scene as it unfolds.

The following day, a mock funeral will be held in the gymnasium for the victims of the crash. Activities will follow so students and staff will have a chance to debrief the event. Grief counselors and facilitators will be on hand both days.

Because this event could be difficult for some students to process, organizers are asking parents/guardians to discuss it with the child beforehand. Those not wanting their students to participate can request this and an alternative setting will be available.
