Dover-Foxcroft American Legion Warrior Race & Fun Run May 25

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Again in 2019 runners and walkers will be able to honor the service and sacrifice of veterans with Dover-Foxcroft American Legion Post 29’s second annual five kilometer (3.1 miles) Warrior Race & Fun Run at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 25.

“The race is May 25, that’s Memorial Day Weekend, and it’s combined with the parade,” American Legion Post 29 Commander Adrienne Clarke said at the Post home on outer Park Street. She said the race will be on a Saturday morning about 48 hours prior to the annual Memorial Day procession downtown.

WARRIOR RACE & FUN RUN MAY 25 — The second annual 5K Warrior Race & Fun Run will be hosted by American Legion Post 29 of Dover-Foxcroft at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 25 (Memorial Day Weekend) — starting and finishing at the 121 Park Street Post home — with proceeds benefiting four organizations providing services to veterans and/or their family members. All participants will receive a commemorative coin, similar to the pictured 2018 item.

“The same four organizations as last year we are giving the race proceeds to,” Clarke said as the Warrior Race & Fun Run will provide funding for the JD Foundation, Wilderness Walk for Warriors, House in the Woods and Back in the Maine Stream. Each organization provides services to veterans and/or their family members.

Clarke said Back in the Maine Stream and Wilderness Walk for Warriors will both have tables at the May 25 event. Wilderness Walk for Warriors officials are planning to bring the organization’s Mobile Memorial Wall, comprised of over 200 names on panels including the 115 post 9/11 Maine deceased service members and the 85-plus names on the Maine Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. The Wilderness Walk for Warriors Mobile Memorial Wall will be carried during the annual hike through the 100 Mile Wilderness in mid-July.

“We are really excited to be supporting that,” Clarke said. She said the Warrior Race & Fun Run will also be taking place during the 100th anniversary year of the American Legion.

She said registration will begin at 8 a.m. on the day of the race or in advance with forms available around Dover-Foxcroft at the Piscataquis Regional YMCA, Mountain’s Market, the Thompson Free Library and American Legion Post 29.

“We are always looking for volunteers,” Clarke said, as those interested can assist on race day if they do not want to traverse the course.

“We have such a beautiful area and it’s great to get out and run for a cause,” she said. Clarke said the 5K route will be the same as last year with the starting and finish lines both located at the Post home at 121 Park Street.

Runners and walkers will take a left from the American Legion to head up Park Street to the Dawes Road. There they will take a left onto the Anderson Road before reaching a turnaround with participants coming back along the same route.

“There will be prizes given to the top male and female runners, adult as well as child,” Clarke said. “All participants will get a coin like the last time.”

The commemorative coins are engraved with the American Legion emblem and the name of the race.

“Volunteers and participants, we will have a meal for them afterwards,” Clarke said. She said a quilt — made and donated by Nancy and Sanford Robinso with longarm sewing donated by Quitingmania — raffle will raise additional proceeds for the four veterans service organizations “that do so much for our military and families.” Raffle ticket holders do not need to be present to win.
