This month at Thompson Free Library
DOVER-FOXCROFT — January, the perennial fresh start, can feel a bit anticlimactic, even weighted with pressure from loose ends of the past year to the bright, uncertain promises of a new one. So, it’s the perfect time to visit the Thompson Free Library (TFL) in Dover-Foxcroft, where our programs, like our collection, feature plenty of your favorite elements mixed with new concepts and new faces — all in a welcoming setting.
Start off 2019 by delving into deeper questions in a dynamic setting with the monthly TFL Philosophy Circle, 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 4. The first half hour will focus on Socrates; then the group will choose a question to explore through conversation. “There is no required reading, your own thoughts and experiences are enough to participate,” explains Library Director Greta Schroeder.
Nurturing Families Through Substance Use and Recovery, a Penquis program, will meet each Wednesday (through April) starting Jan. 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Community Meeting Room. These group discussions will guide parents toward restoring and rebuilding the connection between family members dealing with the impact of substance use. Teresa Sprague of Guilford gives an Artist Talk at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10. Known for her naturalistic pet portraits, she has shifted her focus, creating artwork based on old structures that dot the Maine landscape like barns, sheds, covered bridges and lighthouses. Her expressive, detailed pen & ink, watercolor, and mixed media pieces will be on display this month.
Back by popular demand: The Ten Cent Book Sale, Jan. 10-12 See what hidden treasures you can uncover — at beyond bargain prices (and for a good cause: children’s programming at TFL). Book sale hours are Thursday 2-7 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
STEM Guide Alicia Millette’s Make at TFL series continues on Tuesday, Jan. 22 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Each month Millette will shepherd students of different ages through interesting and educational STEM & STEAM (the “A” is for Art) projects. First up, teens make bath bombs using chemistry know-how in “Chemistry Doesn’t Have to be Boring.”
Parents take note: Brooke Dupuy, a Penquis community outreach coordinator, will shine a light on cyberbullying and internet safety at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29. Learn what you can do to help your children safely navigate the online world, including social media.
Find delicious homemade foods, locally sourced products and more at the Dover Cove Farmers Market from 9 a.m.- 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5 and Saturday, Jan. 19 downstairs at the library. What a delicious and easy way to support area farmers and small businesses.
This January, why not “resolve” to get involved with your local library? TFL is a great space for new experiences and accessible learning — to meet old friends and make new ones. Where the classics mingle with the cutting edge, where the familiar comforts us and the new enlivens us.
