November at Thompson Free Library
DOVER-FOXCROFT — We all need something to look forward to. Anticipation of moments big and small can motivate, create excitement, or ease anxiety. It can help us through a tough time or a long day. Your mouth waters just thinking about that special Thanksgiving dish, you perk up after making a lunch date with a friend, smile at the prospect of browsing that cute shop, and get psyched when your favorite author is writing a new book: “Put me on the list!” (the library patron’s favorite refrain!). November at the Thompson Free Library will give you plenty to look forward to and wanting more.
Creative Kids Art Time begins this month. The first and third Wednesday of every month join children’s librarian Michelle Fagan (a.k.a. Ms. Michelle) from 3:30-4:30 p.m. for art exploration. Materials will be provided. Ages two and up are invited to attend. The first session on Nov. 7 highlights air-dried clay projects.
Like to score a good deal, find the perfect gift or add to your collection? Then, get ready, especially, you fiction fans, for the latest installment of (say it in a deep, dramatic voice) The 10-Cent Book Sale. Book sale hours: Thursday, Nov. 8 from 4-7 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 9 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 10 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
A lot of people, including my father, are eagerly awaiting bestseller author Paul Doiron’s (known for his popular series featuring Maine game warden Mike Bowditch) visit on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. During this event, part of the James Brown Lecture Series, Paul will read from his latest book “Stay Hidden.” The Maine native and former editor of Down East Magazine will also sign books, sold by The Briar Patch (located in downtown Bangor.) Find out how Paul artfully blends the geography and details of Maine with interesting characters and plot twists.
Nerf Night, our perennial classic returns on Friday, Nov. 16 from 6-8 p.m. This after-hours event with chaperones is a super fun way to channel that youthful exuberance and is open to grades 5 and up. Bring your own labeled Nerf equipment (special note: please do not bring Nerf Rival equipment).
Support local farms and businesses, come to the Dover Cove Farmers’ Market returning to the library for the winter months (the first and third Saturday, beginning Saturday, Nov. 17). Area vendors will offer fruits, vegetables, cheeses, crafts, and more.
Maine’s former poet laureate Wesley McNair will read from his latest volume of poems, “The Unfastening” on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 5:30 p.m. He will also give insights into his creative process. This recent work reflects on how someone finds their way back to the world again when “unfastened by loss and despair.”
Each month at the library, we look forward to the unveiling of new artwork and photography by local artists. During November, Milo Art Guild will share their creativity with us. This small friendly group of talented artists meets weekly to hone their skills and learn new ones. From watercolors to acrylics to colored pencils and pastels, they’ll share landscapes, seascapes, florals, birds and wildlife in styles ranging from impressionistic, realistic or abstract, to whimsical and decorative.
Hometown Holidays, the annual community-wide event, is fast approaching on Saturday, Dec. 1. Keep an eye out for details about our library activities for that day.
If anticipation is half the fun, then you are going to have a really happy November thanks to the Thompson Free Library (is Carly Simon singing in your head too?).
