Y pool closing for annual maintenance

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The pool at the Piscataquis Regional YMCA will be closing in September to allow for annual maintenance and renovations. The pool will be closed from Monday, Sept. 16 through Monday, Oct. 14, but will reopen sooner if the work goes faster than planned. The Y pool, the largest public pool in the region contains 100,000 gallons of water and is used by tens of thousands of people every year.

“It’s an inconvenience,” said Deb Boyd, the Y’s executive director, “but when a facility gets as much use as our pool does, we need to close it each year for maintenance.”
Thanks to the generosity of a Plum Creek Timber Company challenge grant, the support of the forest products industry, and others the Y was able to raise over $35,000 for improvements. “We’ll be working to address some over-due maintenance issues. We’ll also be replacing our hydraulic chair lift with a new model that will be easier to use, more convenient for our members and less prone to breakdowns. We couldn’t have done this work without the generosity of Plum Creek Timber Company’s challenge grant and the support of Hardwood Products, CES, Verso Paper, Pleasant River Lumber, Parker Lumber, Lacasce Forestry & Logging, JD Raymond, Donna Hathaway, Key Bank and the Maine Charity Fund of the Maine Community Foundation.”  Boyd encourages people to check the Y’s Facebook page or stop in to check on the status of the project.
When the pool reopens in October, the Y will be starting a full session of aquatics programming including swim lessons for kids, aquatic classes for adults, and a new season for the Waves swim team. For more information on classes or to sign up call the Y at 564-7111.
The Piscataquis Regional YMCA is a mission-driven organization that is committed to the community and dedicated to promoting healthy spirit, mind, and body for all, through programs and services grounded in Christian heritage and the core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
