Moose horns dedication Saturday in Abbot

MARKING THE ABBOT-MILLION ACRE TRAIL — At 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4 the Abbot and Monson historical societies will host a dedication ceremony at the moose horns on Route 15 in Abbot. The original moose horns were placed at this location by Monson settler Joseph Bearce in 1817 to mark the path from the Abbot-Million Acre Trail to the emerging town of Monson. Several sets of horns have been replaced due to theft or damage and this latest set was recently put into place thanks to the efforts of historical society member Elaine Roberts, Basil Patterson, John Libera and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. After a brief ceremony which will include a history of the moose horns, speakers Rep. Paul Stearns, R-Guilford and Sen. Paul Davis, R-Sangerville, members of the Tisbury Manor DAR Chapter and historical society representatives, there will be light refreshments at the Abbot Town Hall.
