Brownville-Brownville Junction Historical Society news

BROWNVILLE — The Brownville-Brownville Junction Historical Society met on June 24 at the Parish House Museum.

Yes, the museum is open for the season. Volunteers staff the museum on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m through September or by appointment (call 965-8070 or 943-7791).

Lana Washburn was welcomed as the group’s new treasurer. Marilyn Kindamo has been the treasurer for many years and was happy to turn the reins over to someone new. The treasury is in good shape provided there are no unexpected expenses. The organization operates totally on donations.

Susan Worcester reported that sales of Ken Hatchette’s book “More Than a Train Yard and a Whistle Stop: The Canadian Pacific Railway’s Brownville Division 1886 to 1963” have been steady this spring. There are only 12 copies of this railroad history available. The book can be purchased at the museum at 72 Church Street or at Simple Sacks in Brownville or from Worcester (call 965-8070 for details). A revised edition of the book will be available locally soon.

George Dean has been in touch with the Charleston Correctional Facility regarding refurbishing the bathroom at the museum. Crews will not be able to get to this project for several months but will be happy to provide the labor for it when they can. The group also talked about replacing the basement outside entrance and painting the building as additions to the bathroom renovation project. The group decided that the cost savings would be worth waiting for.

Dick DeWitt has been contacted regarding improving the lighting at the museum and doing some electrical work.

Volunteers will be developing a “Project List” so that anyone who might want to assist with a project would have some suggested tasks to consider. Anyone wishing to simply volunteer at the museum on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays is encouraged to call Worcester at 965-8070 or stop in at the museum when it is open. Volunteers are always needed.

The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 10 a.m. at the Parish House Museum.
