SeDoMoCha and PCES sprinters medal at league championship

ORONO — Athletes from both SeDoMoCha Middle School in Dover-Foxcroft and Piscataquis Community Elementary School of Guilford brought home medals in the sprints at the 2018 Almquist Middle School Championships held May 21 at the University of Maine.

SeDoMoCha sixth-grader Jackson Smith was the meet winner in the 50 meters in a time of 7.17 seconds. He won the event by .04 seconds, bested 51 other event entrants and set a school record in the process.

Smith also finished sixth in the high jump as he cleared the bar with a personal-best height of 5 feet. Smith joined five eighth-graders in placing at the Almquist meet, as their heights ranged from 5-04 to 5-00.

PCES eighth-grader Matthew Burdin came in second in both the 100 and 200 on May 21, as he is believed to be the first Pirate to medal in both his events at the Almquist Invitational.

Burdin ran a time of 12.71 seconds to place second in the 100, finishing as the runner-up to a time of 12.60 seconds and besting 54 other event entrants.

In the 200 Burdin came in second at 26.88 seconds. He was runner-up to a time of 26.21 seconds and Burdin bested 39 other 200-meter sprinters.

SeDoMoCha’s Jacob Reed placed in the top 10 in a pair of jumps. Reed came in seventh in the high jump at 4-10 and he was eighth in the long jump at 15-01. Miles Gadwah of SeDoMoCha finished ninth in the 55 hurdles with a time of 10.81 seconds.

In the girls’ meet, Heidi Clawson of SeDoMoCha came in 12th in the 400 with a time of 1:13.88 and her time of 2:59.74 in the 800 was good for 14th place. The Eagles’ Elizabeth Hall was 18th in the 50 at 8.33 seconds.

Taylor Folsom of PCES placed 17th in the shot put with a throw of 24-09.50. The Pirates’ Kendall Kimball finished 25th in the 55 hurdles at 11.34 seconds.
