Greenville slugs its way past PCHS for fifth consecutive victory
GUILFORD — Fourteen hits coming from each member of the starting lineup and runs scored in five of seven innings helped Greenville High School earn a 14-3 victory at Piscataquis Community High School during a May 9 interclass contest. Since dropping the 2018 opener, the Class D South Lakers have won five in a row including an 11-1 victory vs. Class C North PCHS a week prior on May 2. The Pirates fell to 3-6 with the loss in the second meeting between the two squads.
The Greenville offense got going in the top of the second as senior Connor DiAngelo scored the first run of the contest on a wild pitch. Junior Nick Caiazzo and senior Noah Pratt — who celebrated his 18th birthday on May 9 by hitting three singles for a team-high trio of hits — would drive in runs on a respective groundout and single to put their team ahead 3-0.
After PCHS got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning — sophomore Wayne Haley’s single drove in senior Matthew Griffith for what would be the first of three times Griffith touched homeplate while also reaching base in all four of his plate appearances — Greenville added three more runs in the team’s next trip to the plate.
Senior Anothy Mason helped his cause on the mound for the Lakers by sending a single up the middle for a pair of runs and part of his tie for a game-leading three RBIs. Two batters later Caiazzo singled to rightfield for the third run of the inning and sixth overall for Greenville.
Four more runs were added in the top of the sixth. PCHS starter Cameron Kane was relieved with no outs and the bases loaded for junior Ethan Chadwick. Laker sophomore Camden Harmon sent a Chadwick pitch into rightfield for a pair of RBIs.
DiAngelo would then hit a sacrifice fly to deep rightfield to bring senior Evan Bjork in from third for run No. 10 and a groundout by senior Damian Hemond drove in Harmon for the 11-1 advantage.
Mason pitched the first five-plus inning for his team — scattering five hits and four walks while striking out four — as Pratt came on in relief with runners at third and first and no outs in the home half of the sixth. Ethan Chadwick quickly drew a walk to load the bases, and Haley singled up the middle to drive in Griffith and keep the Pirates under the 10-run mercy rule at 11-2 to ensure another at-bat for the team.
Pratt got out of the inning by striking out the next two hitters and inducing a flyball out to shortstop.
In the seventh sophomore Chris Caiazzo doubled, a sacrifice fly came off the bat of Harmon and Hemond’s single all drove in runs to end the day for Greenville.
