Piscataquis Community Elementary School recognizes Students of the Month

GUILFORD — Each month outstanding pupils in grades 5-8 at Piscataquis Community Elementary School are honored by being named Students of the Month. On the third Friday of the month the honorees are presented with certificates in front of their peers during the morning meeting.

At the March 23 all-school assembly to start the day six Students of the Month, who are selected by their teachers for criteria such as outstanding citizenship and academic performance, were named. The Students of the Month are fifth-graders Lena Pearson and Devan Pelkey; sixth-grader Kaileigh Elderkin; seventh-graders Emma Calnan and Gracie Talbot; and eighth-grader Sydney Hutchins.

“That was a lot of people that achieved success this month and achieved success previously,” Principal Anita Wright said, as the assembly included the presentation of certificates for all students making the honor roll in the first and second trimesters.

The morning meeting on the third Friday of the month also features the recognition of PCES “Upstanders,” students who have stood up for their peers and/or others over the previous few weeks.

Guidance director Jason Schriver said the March Upstanders include a student who helped a younger peer pick up a dropped lunch — serving as an example for others — and a quartet of youngsters who assisted a substitute bus driver with the various stops on the route.

All Upstanders are presented with a personalized boomerang created by Schriver, hung on the wall in the main lobby. The boomerangs will go home with the recipients at the end of the school year.
