Vendors, crafters wanted for Dexter Community Playground Family Fun Day

DEXTER — After a successful work day getting some of the equipment installed, the Dexter Community Playground Committee is now preparing for a Family Fun Day on Saturday, Sept. 14.
Committee member Sue Hill said that while September seems a long way off, people get busy during the summer and time flies. “This has also turned into something much bigger than we expected,” said Hill. “So far, we have 13 vendors signed up who found out about it on our Facebook page.”

The committee has raised about $32,000 toward their goal of $130,000 to replace all the 20-year-old playground equipment at Crosby Park, some of which was made from pressure-treated wood. A good turnout of volunteers installed some of the new pieces last month, despite on-and-off rain showers for most of the day.
Hill said that while the Family Fun Day hopes to generate some income, that’s not the whole purpose of the celebration. “We’re having a ‘soft grand opening’ of the playground that day, a lot of kids’ games, food booths and entertainment by some of the Heart of Maine Idol contestants,” she said. “By having this at the playground, we hope to attract a lot of families. If it’s successful, we hope to make it an annual event.”
Vendor and craft space rentals are $25 for a 10- by 10-foot area and the event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants should bring their own tables, chairs and a canopy, if needed. Some spots will be set up in the shady areas of the park, Hill said.
