Piscataquis Community Elementary School recognizes Students of the Month

GUILFORD — Each month outstanding pupils in grades 5-8 at Piscataquis Community Elementary School are honored by being named Students of the Month. On the third Friday of the month the honorees are presented with certificates in front of their peers during the morning meeting.

For January eight Students of the Month, who are selected by their teachers for criteria such as outstanding citizenship and academic performance, were named during the Jan. 19 meeting. The Students of the Month are Daniel Hurd and Vivian Feaga, grade 5; Jada Wyman, grade 6; Saia Miles and Gavin Richards, grade 7; and Matt Chadbourne, Hailee Hartford and Jessie Mayberry, grade 8.

“Keep up your great work you guys,” Assistant Principal/Technology Director Jessica Dunton said to the recipients following the presentation.

The morning meeting on the third Friday of the month also includes the recognition of PCES “Upstanders,” students who have stood up up for their peers and/or others over the previous few weeks.

Dunton said the January Upstanders include a student who wore his pajamas to school to help alleviate the fears of his younger brother, who thought he would be the only child dressed for bed on Pajama Day in pre-kindergarten, and another who brought home her teammate’s misplaced water bottle after basketball practice and cleaned it and filled the container with water to be ready for the next practice.

Members of the girls A basketball team are also January Upstanders for their community service in attending a fundraising supper in Dover-Foxcroft for the father of one of their coaches. The meal served as a benefit for him as he recovers from a stroke.

All Upstanders are presented with a personalized boomerang created by guidance director Jason Schriver, hung on the wall in the main lobby and will go home with the recipients at the end of the school year.

Dunton explained the boomerangs signify that “good deeds come back to you.”

“It is really important in a community to take care of each other, and one of the ways we recognize the good things the kids are doing are the Upstanders boomerangs.”

“The kids love it,” Dunton said, saying the display of boomerangs in the lobby will continue to grow as the year progresses.
