PCES recognizes ‘HERO’ students

GUILFORD — Once a month students in kindergarten through grade 4 at Piscataquis Community Elementary School are honored with the presentation of HERO awards during the school-wide morning meeting on the first Friday of each month.

“HERO stands for honesty, effort, respect or responsibility and others — showing concern and caring for others,” PCES Principal Anita Wright said on Jan. 12 (a week after a school day starting with a one-hour delay to postpone the presentation) following the handing out of the month’s 15 HERO awards. “Students who earn recognition in any one of those areas get to be HEROs.”

Wright said several HERO award winners are chosen per grade by the teachers. “We really want to give recognition for students who are right, not just give attention to when they are wrong.”

She said the program is similar to the Students of Month who are selected among the grade 5-8 pupils. Wright said the Student of the Month honors include academic criteria but “with K-4 it’s really about citizenship.”

With the entire student body gathered in the gymnasium to the start the day, Wright and Assistant Principal Jessica Dunton called each of the January HERO honorees down from the bleachers to receive a certificate and be recognized by the audience.

The January HERO recipients are, kindergarten to grade 2, Keairha Badger, Isabella Chase, Khloe Farnham, Kylee Farnham, Anna Folsom, Jenna Grant, Mason Hackey, Jaylin Ouellette, Avery Pomerleau and Kloe Shorey.
The grade 3-4 honorees are Kiley Cupero, Brady Gaw, Shelby Grant, Zachary McInnis and Isabella Tetreault.
