January’s First Friday free movie will be ‘Age of Stupid’

DEXTER — It may be hard to believe but Dexter Dover Area Towns in Transition (DDATT) was started a little more than eight years ago, a few local people concerned about climate change and how its effects might impact the area. The fledgling group began to occasionally screen films on various aspects of the subject at the town hall and then the Abbott Memorial Library in Dexter, which became popular enough to warrant a monthly public meeting, dubbed the First Friday Free Film and Discussion.

One of the first films to screen was “Age of Stupid,” produced in 2009 by Franny Armstrong, which will be shown again Friday, Jan. 5 almost nine years after its initial release. This ambitious documentary/drama/animation hybrid stars Pete Postlethwaite as an archivist in the devastated world of the future, asking the question “Why didn’t we stop climate change when we still had the chance?”He looks back on footage of real people around the world in the years leading up to 2015 before runaway climate change took place. Join other DDATT supporters to review the 90-minute film and determine how accurately the filmmakers predicted our 2017 world.

The film will start promptly at 6 p.m., with a facilitated discussion afterwards until 8:30 p.m. at the Abbott Memorial Library, 1 Church Street in Dexter. Light refreshments will be available as always, and participants are encouraged to bring their own edible contributions should they wish. No snow date is planned.
