Chief Deputy Young announces candidacy for sheriff

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Chief Deputy Robert Young has announced that he is seeking the office of sheriff of Piscataquis County in 2018.

Young began a law enforcement career with the sheriff’s office in 1984, working as a corrections officer and dispatcher. He also worked part-time patrol for the Brownville and Milo police departments. In 1990 he attended the Maine Criminal Justice Academy where he was the class president. Young progressed through the ranks as investigator, patrol sergeant, lieutenant and currently he is the chief deputy for Sheriff John Goggin. Young has also been the Piscataquis District Attorney’s Office special investigator for the past 27 years, primarily investigating child abuse and sexual assaults.

In addition, Young was a DARE officer for many years in the SAD 4 and 68 schools. He has served on numerous boards and committees, including the Piscataquis County High Risk Domestic Violence Response Team, of which he is a founding member, and the Penquis Children’s Advocacy Center.

Young lives in Dover-Foxcroft with his spouse of 42 years, Emmy. They raised four children and are now the proud grandparents of eight. In addition to police work, he has pastored area churches for 30 years.

Young said he “wants to build on the fine tradition of the Piscataquis Sheriff’s Office.” As sheriff he has several initial goals:

regularly attend selectman meetings in order to build strong relationships between the sheriff’s office and local leaders;

establish a Sheriff’s Volunteer Corp with the primary purpose of developing a system to assist and keep in contact with senior citizens, many of whom live alone;

begin a sheriff’s reading to kids’ program in schools and libraries, building bridges with the next generations;

and keep strong connections between the sheriff’s office, fire and ambulance services and other Piscataquis County law enforcement, building a stronger public safety response system.

“For 33 years I’ve served the folks of this great county; I would be honored to serve as your sheriff,” Young said.
