D-F selectmen declare October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in town

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The town of Dover-Foxcroft has joined numerous other municipalities and organizations in recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, as the selectmen formally signed a proclamation during a Sept. 25 meeting.

“The Partners for Peace event is happening next week, Oct. 4 I believe, and the walk is at 4 p.m. at Kiwanis Park,” Town Manager Jack Clukey said about the Walk to End Domestic Abuse being hosted by the the domestic violence resource center serving Piscataquis and Penobscot counties. “I was asked if someone from the board could read the proclamation, I’m going to be at the (Maine Municipal Association) convention.”

A representative of the town is scheduled to be at Kiwanis Park on Wednesday afternoon to read the Domestic Violence Awareness Month proclamation prior to the start of the walk.

In other business, Clukey touched upon several items in his report.

“We heard a lot about the four-way intersection and the signs are up,” he said about juncture where Autumn Avenue and Morton Avenue meet near the town office. Four-way stop markers have been placed at each stop sign to indicate the change in traffic pattern made earlier in the year.

“I think people are getting used to it,” Clukey said. Formerly, only vehicles on Autumn Avenue needed to stop at the intersection.

“I wanted to mention the land use ordinance committee has really been working hard, they have had two meetings this week,” the town manager said. “They have covered a lot of ground, literally looking at everything to do with land use to get the ordinance to fit with our comprehensive plan.”

The land use committee is aiming to get the document on the municipal ballot in June.

“If anyone wants to sit in, it’s usually the fourth Wednesday of the month,” Clukey said, with the sessions starting in the early evening at the Morton Avenue Municipal Building.

The selectmen normally meet the second and fourth Monday of the month, but the first of October meetings will instead be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10 instead of on Columbus Day (Monday, Oct. 9).
