October at Thompson Free Library
DOVER-FOXCROFT — October is a great in between time. Traces of summer finally give way to cooler, crisper days. Fallen leaves and pumpkin spice are everywhere. And the morning chill hints at what lies ahead. This month, the Thompson Free Library offers up a satisfying mix of programs and events including a celebration of the library itself and a fun Halloween treat.
Librarian Michelle Fagan is slated to give book talks at SeDoMoCha Middle School library the mornings of Thursday, Oct. 12 and Friday, Oct. 13. Her goal: to get second- and third-graders interested in age-appropriate books and ignite their passion for reading.
The Brown Bag Lunch Series continues on Thursday, Oct. 12 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. with Domestic Violence 101 presented by Partners for Peace (formerly the Spruce Run-Womancare Alliance). Casey Faulkingham and Angie Alfonso will discuss how to recognize domestic violence and how to helpfully respond to it when someone you know is experiencing it.
The library is celebrating its 120th birthday by inviting everyone to tea on from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 14. Whether you are a regular patron or have never set foot in the building — local or out-of-towner — you are welcome to join us for tea or coffee and delicious desserts. Weather permitting, we will open the original front doors to celebrate this special occasion.
If you’re a fan of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” C.S. Lewis’ classic fantasy novel, then you’ll want to introduce your kids to the magical world of Narnia on Tuesday, Oct. 17 as from 6-7 p.m. we kick off The Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe Reading Game. The Thompson Free Library is partnering with Center Theatre for this family-oriented program in anticipation of the theatre’s Christmas production (directed by Bobby Keniston) of the much-beloved book. Get a free copy of the book, enjoy some snacks and learn how you can win a family pack of tickets to the show.
Trick or treaters take note on Halloween from 4-6:30 p.m. (Tuesday, Oct. 31) our spooky librarians Michelle and Val will have the original front entrance open to hand out books and candy to kids who dare to enter.
October promises to be a memorable month to learn about invaluable community resources and participate in fantastic family events that encourage the best escape of all: a good book.
