Local authors night Sept. 22 at Abbott Memorial Library
DEXTER — At 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22, the Abbott Memorial Library will host a local authors night. Five authors will be present to read and discuss their books. Signed copies will be available for purchase and refreshments will be served.
The authors include Meredith Josselyn of Dexter with “Everything is Connected: An Ecological Tale.” Josselyn has written a story for children that follows a young coyote and her mother as they take a walk through three different habitats. Throughout their walk, they encounter different ways in which humans affect the environment. Concepts such as pollution, deforestation and urban sprawl are introduced through vivid artwork, and the overall message is one of hope for a better future.
“Hardscrabble Lodge: True Maine Bush Flying Stories” by Jake Morrel are stories of Jake and Beth Morrel’s years spent running a hunting and fishing lodge on Spencer Pond north of Greenville. Morrel recounts his many exciting adventures searching for lost guests as night, a gale that flies the plane minus the pilot, rescues from forest fires and float plane crashes. Excitement and terror are combined with a practical guide to wilderness survival. Bush flying challenges and techniques are explored in detail.
Carol Feurtado from Dexter has written a collection of short stories titled “Homes Places and Blessings.” These imaginative stories bring to life many historical eras in settings from Virginia north to Maine. Some of the stories feature actual historical persons from Dexter’s history in a fictional recounting of their lives.
“Yarns from my Shepherd” by Michelle Dumoulin of Corinna describes how she makes hand spun yarn using the wool from her sheep on the Good Shepherd Farm. This book will appeal to anyone who loves working with yarn or crafts and especially to those who want to draw closer to God. As a knitting designer, she has included original knitting patterns.
Stephen B. Rollins of Garland has penned “Ronnie the Lobster,” a book that takes the reader beneath the ocean waters to the home of a young lobster named Ronnie. Readers re introduced to creatures in his world — friends like Sally the Sun Starfish and Harry the Hermit Crab. Readers learn of others that are not so friendly, like Carl the Rock Crab and Billy the Wolf Fish. One day Ronnie gets curious and despite the warnings from his friends and advice from the Old Wise One, he takes a chance and will soon see he is in for quite an exciting adventure. People of all ages will enjoy this book, its colorful characters and the lessons that Ronnie learns.
