Two local Girl Scout Troops visit the nation’s capitol

WASHINGTON, D.C. — How do you kick off your daughter’s summer vacation? By taking them to visit our nation’s capitol in Washington, D.C. Local Girl Scouts Troops 915 and 1503, each based in Dover-Foxcroft, had an amazing opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. from June 21-25. The event is offered to any Girl Scout of Maine from junior to ambassador levels every five years. Over 300 Girl Scouts of Maine participated in this event.

There we had the opportunity to meet the state’s representatives and pose for a group photo. We got a tour of Capitol Hill along with the Holocaust Memorial Museum.

After the group events, the various Girl Scout troops dispersed so they can get the chance to check out the local museums and memorials at their own pace. The girls also got to see a vast ethnic diversity and tried out the local cuisine.

Troop 915 visited the National Air and Space Museum, Botanic Gardens, National Zoo, National Sculpture Garden, Lincoln Memorial and Vietnam War Veteran Memorial. They were able to see the Washington Monument and the White House on a double decker bus tour.

The Troop 915 girls’ favorite experience was the Metro. They learned to buy passes and navigate the stops to find their way around Washington, D.C.

Troop 1503 visited the National Zoo, Lincoln Memorial, U.S. Department of Treasury, Madame Tussaud Wax Museum, Washington Monument, National Gallery of Art and the National Air and Space Museum.

The girls’ favorite experience was the National Zoo. There the girls go to see different species of wildlife as well exotic and endangered species.

We had an amazing experience checking out our nation’s capital. The local people were nice and eager to help us, when occasionally we took a wrong turn during our travel. We like to thank the Girl Scouts of Maine for an amazing lifetime opportunity.
