Food cupboard thanks community for support, seeks volunteers

To The Editor;
The new Dover-Foxcroft Area Food Cupboard (DFAFC) consists of Bowerbank, Garland, Atkinson, Sebec, Willimantic, Sangerville, and Dover-Foxcroft and has been in existence for two years. We want to thank both the Congregational Church and the Town Office of Dover-Foxcroft for giving us storage space for our food items. These locations have allowed us to distribute food bimonthly.

Our purpose is to feed our community and to build business relationships. Some months we feed as many as 120 homes. We have built good relationships with Will’s, Shaws, Save-a-Lot, Dollar Tree, Subways, and Hannaford’s in Dexter. These businesses donate weekly to our cupboard. These stores have supplied food and held food drives to benefit our community and food stores. The post office also sponsored a large food drive in May. We are currently working with the Kiwanis with their backpack program and have provided food for the backpacks.

We wish to thank the many individuals and businesses that donate regularly. Thank you for all your assistance to help fight food insecurity.

We know food insecurity is a major problem. If you are food insecure, you may come to food distribution on the second and fourth Thursdays from 2 p.m.–5 p.m. at the Congregational Church. Bring an ID and proof of residency.

We welcome new volunteers and will gladly train anyone who wishes to help. We have need for people in administration to check people in and sign people up for assistance. Our staff will help people choose items and carry food to their cars. We could use extra hands helping set up at noon and cleaning up after 5 p.m. Thank you to our volunteers who have helped us and continue to help us.

Thank you again to all the stores who are very generous and helpful. May we continue to work together to help those who are now in need. Thank you to volunteers, because you are needed to help us feed those in need.
